Manufaturing in Portugal: local handmade homeware to last

Mariamélia

“It’s not easy to describe a brand selling bread-proofing baskets to enamel ceiling lampshades. I’m not a specialist either in sourdough bread or lighting solutions. Instead, I’ve been specializing in understanding and dismantling the manufacturing of any product in order to comprehend its chain of value and production. Because what really matters to me is exactly the way each object is made and to know exactly how it comes to be.”
Mariamélia intends to create a conversation about manufacturing in Portugal by developing and choosing significant objects, together with local craftsmen and artisans, who master rare technologies and work on a small scale, often with semi-industrial processes.

Based in northern Portugal, I work together with local artisans and makers to develop new products and curate some traditional pieces. All are handmade with local materials, having into account environmental and social sustainability.

Even if I haven't met all the makers behind these products, I know who made each item: all pieces arrive to you with a card stating who made it and where.
